Sukhothai
The old city of Sukhothai was the first capital of Thailand and flourished
in the 13th and 14th century.
The ruins cover an area of 45 square km and form a UNESCO historical parc.

Akha village
The mountainous regions of north and west Thailand are inhabited by several
ethnic minorities, often called "the hill tribes". Touristic treks to these hill tribes
are very populair, especially in the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai region.

The Akha live in Thailand, Laos, Burma and Yunnan, but originate from Tibet.
The dangling silver ornaments are characteristic for Akha people.
A lot of these hill tribes live from tourism nowadays.

Up in the hills the temperature can drop to 10 to 15 degree centigrade.
Very cold if you are used to temperatures exceeding the 30 degree centigrade!

Countryside
Most of central Thailand is rather flat. Rice is grown on dry fields.
This and the following pictures are taken in a small village near Yasothon,

Harvesting is still a manual work.
To protect themselves against the sun, the people wear thick clothes.

Lunch is served on the fields.
Water, sticky rice and very spicy soup.

Traditionally people eat with their hands in Thailand.
Sticky rice with soup is common for breakfast, lunch and diner.
This type of rice tastes similar to bread.

Kids and birds
With schools present even in very small villages, the literacy rate exceeds 85%.
Children learn English at school and from watching television.
This makes it quite easy to communicate with ordinary people in Thailand.

Puppet show
With no cinema around the corner, the local people create their own cinema.
Maybe not as advanced as the latest Hollywood movie, but not less
entertaining!

Bridge over the River Kwai
The infamous bridge over the River Kwai (or Khwae) is part of the 'Death
Railway' to Burma, build by prisoners of war during the Japanese occupation.
The bridge is still in use, although only small parts date back to WWII.
