Lake Toba
Lake Toba is the result of a massive volcanic eruption about 100,000 years ago.
The lake is actually a gigantic caldera. It is the largest lake of South East Asia
and the number one tourist spot of Sumatra.

The kids are imitating Michael Jackson's moonwalk.
Yep, a truly 1990 picture!
The picture is taken at the Samosir island in Lake Toba.

Borobudur
The Borobudur on Java is one of the greatest Buddhist relics in South East Asia.
It is build sometime between 750 and 850 AD and was abandoned and
forgotten soon after. The first restoration was done by Raffles in 1815.

Bromo
The Gunung Bromo (or Bromo volcano) is an active volcano lying in the center of the moon like landscape of the Tengger Massif, Java.
Especially at sunrise the sights are very spectacular.

Indonesia is famous for its sawas or rice terraces.
Since all islands are volcanic, the soil is very fertile.

The scientific name of the tjitjak is Hemidactylus Frenatus.
With a size of 10 cm it is a small member of the Gekko family.

The "Man" (Orang) "of the Forest" (Utan).
Orang Utans are found only in Sumatra and Kalimantan.
This picture is taken in Bukit Lawang, a national parc in the north of Sumatra.

Sulphur
Sulphur deposits at a volcanic geyser on the top of the Sibayak volcano.
Gunung Sibayak has an altitude of 2094 meters and lays next to the town
Berastagi, north Sumatra.

With 700,000 inhabitants Padang is the third-largest city of Sumatra.
The city is loaded with blue three-wheeled cabs, although some yellow ones
do exist also...

Padang is famous for its spicy Minangkabau cooking that is found throughout
Indonesia. This picture shows the colourful market or pasar.

Kerinci
Kerinci is an active volcano which last erupted in 1934.
With 3805 meters it is the highest mountain in Indonesia outside Irian Jaya.
It is located in the Kerinci Seblat National Parc, home of a few dozen tigers.

Maninjau
38 km west of Bukittinggi lays a beautiful mountain crater lake: Maninjau.
The lake is surrounded by fields and small villages.
Monkeys and giant bats inhabit the trees.

Nias
Nias is quite a large island, 125 km off the west coast of Sumatra.
The southern Lagundri bay is famous for its surfing break.
Also unique is the enigmatic ancient megalithic culture found on Nias.
